REVIEW: The Summer Blockbusters Begin with Godzilla: King of the Monsters – Tokyo Premiere

After 5 years since Godzilla’s last big screen debut, he’s finally back and better than ever!

Recently I had the opportunity to attend the Godzilla King of the Monsters premiere in Godzilla’s birthplace of Tokyo, and it was kaiju heaven! Let’s get straight to the point, Godzilla King of the Monsters is your perfect classic summer blockbuster. You have big spectacle action, amazing special effects, and an undeniably beautiful score. In 2014, Godzilla hit the big screen to western audiences with a lukewarm reception. While the movie was ultimately a finical success, there was a lot less Godzilla in a movie titled, “Godzilla” than many were expecting. Gareth Edwards ultimately went with the Jaws-like approach in his film, using Godzilla sparingly to buildup the suspense. Which I in turn actually appreciated, but it also left many other audiences wanting more! Legendary the company behind this new found “MonsterVerse” which also contains Kong Skull Island, heard the criticism from audiences, and definitely gave them what they’ve been asking for with this new installment.

Co-written and directed by Michael Dougherty, Godzilla King of the Monsters follows the events of 2014’s Godzilla thru the efforts of a crypto-zoological agency called Monarch. Kyle Chandler, Vera Farmiga and Millie Bobby Brown star as a splintered family caught in the middle of the biggest monster brawl the world has ever seen. Humanity is at the brink of total annihilation, and it seems the only way to correct its path is by releasing this god-like titans. The original crowning jewels of the Toho company all return to the big screen including, Godzilla, Mothra, Rodan and the ever so evil 3-headed King Ghidorah.

This is the Godzilla movie fan have been hoping for! The human elements definitely fill in the need of plot and backstory, but honestly this is a Godzilla movie, and what we’re all really here for, is a monstrous spectacle of battling kaijus! And oh boy, does King of the Monsters definitely deliver, time and time again! Most, if not all of the action sequences will make you want to impulsively want to yell and cheer, including my personal favorites; the Rodan’s chase sequence, and an explosive final battle royale between all the monsters.

Recently I had the opportunity to attend the Godzilla King of the Monsters Premiere in Tokyo and visit Toho Studios, the original birthplace of Godzilla himself. Godzilla has spanned over 65 years and 35 films becoming not only an icon in Japan, but all over the world. It’s remarkable to see where this franchise has started, and where it is today!

Godzilla King of the monster is not only a nonstop thrill ride that will leave audiences on the edge of their seat, but also a love letter to all the fans. The final shot alone is basically everything a Godzilla fan could ever hope for, and more. LONG LIVE THE KING!
