REVIEW: Frozen 2 – Magic Strikes Twice!

Frozen 2 manages to capture the same magic from the first, with a more mature storyline and even more powerful songs!

Now, obviously I don’t wanna give away any spoilers since the film is still more than a week out and there’s a lot to uncover within this sequel. So instead I just want to list off some of my favorite aspects from this installment, and why you definitely NEED to see it!

1. The Story

Frozen 2 gets deep, real deep. While the first Frozen dealt with the theme of family, and the love of family being just as powerful as romantic love. Frozen 2 deals with the idea of self-discovery & change; nothing stays the same forever. Elsa, Anna, and Kristoff all seem to embark on this journey in order to find the answers to their past, but along the way find themselves in the process. So again, when say Frozen 2 gets deep, it gets deep! You really get a sense that the target audience for this sequel is the kids who grew up seeing Frozen in theaters over 6 years ago. The storyline & characters have definitely matured with its original audience and tackles a bit more complex issues than finding a prince. All I can say is stay away from spoilers as much as possible, discovering the answers to this film along these characters lends yourself to the journey.

The Songs

Obviously I can’t talk about Frozen without talking about the songs! So yes, Kristen and Bobby Lopez have done it once again! Frozen 2 somehow manages to capture the magic of “Let it Go” from the first film, in not one, but two songs in this sequel! Elsa has two powerhouse solos here, the first being “Into the Unknown” which I’m sure most of you have heard a bit of already. But the second, “Show Yourself” which ends up being an even more powerful anthem, and one of the most visually stunning sequences in the film! “Into the Unknown” was thrown out to the world early only to distract us with the absolute surprise of “Show Yourself.” However, while Elsa easily takes the cake for catchiest songs, my favorite song is hands down Kristoff’s “Lost in the Woods.” Yes, Kristoff finally has his own song here, and thankfully this song definitely makes up for his lack of singing in the first. Not only is the song itself great, but it’s also what the filmmakers have done with the song and how it’s presented within the film that is almost unbelievable. I think it’ll be at the top of everyone’s list after seeing it, and I truly still cannot believe Disney actually did this!

Comedy

The writing in Frozen 2 is near perfect. After spending nearly 6 years with these characters, I think both the writers and voice actors have perfected them through and through; especially Josh Gad’s Olaf. Of course, the main purpose of Olaf’s character was always comedic relief, but wow did they dial him up to an 11. Olaf lands joke, after joke, after joke and it never read as annoying or too much, and that’s thanks in part to not only the writing but Gad’s delivery! The range of bust-gut laughing, to tears of sadness & joy you’ll experience throughout this film is outstanding. Bring tissues not only for your tears of sadness but your tears of laughter.

All in all, Frozen 2 manages to elevate the property to even higher heights! I cannot wait to step back into the unknown and experience this chapter once again!

Frozen 2 hits theaters on November 22nd! Tickets now available!
